VOICE17 AI COMIC DUBBING GUIDE
How to Do Multi-Character AI Dubbing
When several characters talk in the same scene, viewers should know who is speaking with their eyes closed. Here is how to cast, separate and reuse AI voices across a series.

Create real distance between characters
Separate characters on five dimensions: apparent age, pitch, vocal weight (thin vs. full), speaking pace and delivery style. Swapping between two similar-sounding voices is not enough — viewers will still mix them up.
- Age: a teenage hero and a middle-aged mentor should never be confusable.
- Pitch: spread main characters across low, mid and high registers.
- Pace: a fast-talking sidekick next to a slow, deliberate villain separates them instantly.
The protagonist needs a voice that lasts
The protagonist appears the most and goes through the most emotional change. When casting, don’t test a single highlight line — test an ordinary line, a quiet low moment and an outburst with the same voice before you commit.
Keep the narrator from stealing the scene
- Informational narration: prioritize clarity and steadiness.
- Mystery or horror narration: slow down and leave space between sentences.
- Action narration: more energy is fine, but keep it clearly different from the protagonist.
Build reusable character voice cards
For each character, save the voice, language, pace, emotional baseline and a test clip. When you start the next episode, reuse the saved settings first, then adjust only for the new scene. In Voice17 you can save voices to your library so every episode starts from the same cast.
Checking a multi-character dialogue
- First: can you identify every character without looking?
- Second: does each line hand off smoothly to the next?
- Third: does the emotion escalate with the conflict instead of staying flat?
Frequently asked questions
How do I stop two characters from sounding the same?
Change at least two of the five dimensions — age, pitch, vocal weight, pace or delivery — between them. If they still blur, give one character a distinctly different default emotion, for example calm versus excitable.
Can I clone a voice for a specific character?
Yes. Voice17 supports AI voice cloning from a short sample, as long as you have permission to use that voice. The cloned voice can then be saved and reused like any library voice.
What if a character needs to change voice for a plot reason?
Treat it as a new voice card, such as "Hero – possessed", and keep the original card untouched so you can switch back cleanly.
